What Does Good
Design Smell Like?
By Dimitri KoumBis
One Of my fOndest memOries of working as a visual merchandiser
in retail was reinventing the store aesthetic each season, spending countless
hours planning, budgeting, building, and then placing product so that the
store told a cohesive story to our customers. At the end of floorsets, after
photographing the space to archive for future reference and right before we
opened our doors to the start of the new season, I would light our most fragrant
namesake candle. The candle’s scent would radiate through the store, mixing
with the sawdust and paint still lingering in the air, having a sensory impact
well beyond what my other senses could produce. The olfactory experience
made the store experience come alive, a holistic approach that retailers in any
sector can agree drives a greater branded reality to both their employees and
consumers alike.
Our sense of smell is activated by various receptors in the nasal cavity that
are processed in the olfactory cortex, which is located within the limbic system.
This is the same area of the brain where human behavior, emotion, and long-term memory are processed. According to the Research Institute for Fragrance
Materials, 75 percent of emotions we generate on a daily basis are affected by
smell. Next to sight, it is the most important sense we have.
